'MONO - A - MONO'

This is the standard definition of Monoprint and Monotype. Our prints are both monoprints (with matrix) and

Monotypes.(without matrix.). We mostly use monoprint to cover both categories, but some people are interested in the Differences. I will bring you the book about it that our work is included in.

The main characteristic of a monoprint is that no two prints are identical, hence mono, though many of the same elements may be present. All or part of a monoprint is created from a matrix, etched plate, woodblock or such, whereas a monotype image is painted directly onto a smooth unaltered plate and then transferred to paper in a press.

Both monoprints and monotypes involve the transfer of ink from a matrix (copper plate, litho stone, silkscreen, etc) to a printable surface. For monotypes, the plate is featureless, containing no etched lines or engraved features that can pass on any series of characteristics to the prints. The artist therefore manipulates the ink on the plate, resulting in a one-of-a-kind print, that can have many painterly qualities.

Monoprints can be considered variations on a theme, usually the result of permanent features on the plate such as etched lines. Variations on the theme are made when the plate is inked differently prior to each print. Certain characteristics on the plate will be passed to each print, but the way of inking up, the colours, the size of prints can vary every time.

ARTIST STATEMENT

JOSEPH STABILITO
I've been turning to art since my childhood as a way to express myself. In my early years, I was aligned with abstract expressionism. I followed the heroes of the day, anxious to learn the craft of painting. I flirted with differing styles and techniques of course. But my love of color and design were always eminent. Another constant in my work is the attention to surface typography.

My newest paintings surge and pop with electricity. I begin by pouring paint onto my canvas. I'm influenced by everything I'm seeing in my world. Pattern, composition, and line are always considered. There's a primal beauty I'm out to capture. Color is a trusted tool in my arsenal, and I'm not afraid to be seduced by it. I approach each piece intuitively, allowing myself to be pulled into its orbit. I give myself permission to experiment and push into uncharted territory. It's the process of making that draws me into the work. Contextually, I'm playing with surrealism, but narratively I'm pulling rom anatomy, pop art, graffiti, and more. Swirls inhabit shapes that coalesce around networks, Doodles and drawings overlap the dimensional space. But in the end, what I'm offering the viewer is an invitation into my world. And I'm hoping that they will find a beauty and mystery in it.
