James Austin Murray is a New York-based contemporary artist known for his captivating and meditative paintings that explore the interplay of light and color. Born in 1969, Murray's artistic journey has been marked by experimentation and innovation.
Murray's paintings are characterized by their use of ivory black oil paint, which he applies using unconventional tools like wallpaper brushes with up to nine heads attached to a long handle. This unique technique creates intricate, textured surfaces that seem to shift and undulate in the light.
The artist's work has been exhibited globally, with solo shows in prestigious galleries like the Bruno David Gallery in St. Louis and the Lyons Wier Gallery in New York. His paintings are also held in public collections, including the Sofitel in Philadelphia, the Four Seasons Hotel in Washington D.C., and the Tom Ford design house.
Murray's artistic philosophy is rooted in his fascination with light and its effects on our perception. He sees his paintings as an invitation to the viewer to explore the subtle interplay of light and color. With his unique technique and captivating artworks, James Austin Murray continues to push the boundaries of contemporary art.
